Sometimes favorite credit cards can let us down. For example, Citi dropped car rental insurance from its list of benefits. It may be time to rethink how you pay for upcoming trips.
When a credit card offers car rental insurance, you can decline the expensive over-the-counter insurance. For many Citi cardholders, slashing these travel perks is a deal breaker.
In the fall of 2019, Citibank sharply reduced its included travel perks. For most cards, Citi dropped car rental insurance and trip cancellation. It also dropped worldwide accident insurance, delay protection, baggage delay protection and more.
Notably, Citi did not cut travel benefits for its Costco cards. They still offer worldwide car rental insurance, travel accident insurance, roadside assistance, damage and theft protection and more.
Citi Cards No Longer Cover Car Rental Insurance
Benefits discontinued for the majority of Citi credit cards:
- Worldwide Car Rental Insurance
- Trip Cancellation & Interruption Protection
- Worldwide Travel Accident Insurance
- Trip Delay Protection
- Baggage Delay Protection
- Lost Baggage Protection
- Citi Price Rewind
- 90 Day Return Protection
- Roadside Assistance Dispatch Service
- Travel & Emergency Assistance
Citi Costco Credit Cards Are the Exception
These new benefit changes affect the lion’s share of Citibank-issued cards. The exception is co-branded Citi Costco cards.
The Citi Costco Anywhere Visa Business Credit Card still covers primary car rental insurance. Unusually, it does not explicitly exclude personal rentals from primary coverage.
It’s important to pay with a credit card that offers at least secondary insurance. Better yet, choose a card that offers primary insurance protection. If you’re unsure what your credit card offers, call the issuer before you pay.
Before booking a trip, always double check to ensure that your credit card will offer the perks and benefits you need. If not, use another card to pay for the trip.
