When it comes to renting a car, don’t give up hope if you’re under 25 years old. Hertz is a young person’s friend: Every Hertz location in the United States and Canada will let you rent a car if you’re 20, and some will even rent to drivers as young as 18. Here is everything you need to know about the minimum age to rent from Hertz Car Rental.

Hertz’s Minimum Age Policy

At Hertz, the minimum age to rent a vehicle at most locations in the US and Canada is just 20 years old. You must have a valid driver’s license that’s been in good standing for over a year. Most locations will accept a valid debit or credit card. But check before you rent because some neighborhood spots may only accept a credit card.

Car Rentals for 18 and 19 Year Olds

Good news for younger people who want to rent a car. Two states—Michigan and New York—require rental car companies to rent to 18 year olds with valid driver’s licenses. The minimum age is also 18 in Quebec, Canada. In Alabama and Nebraska, Hertz’s minimum age to rent a vehicle is 19.

Young Renter Fee

If you’re under 25, Hertz charges an additional young renter fee of $19 per day. But there are a couple ways to avoid the underage fee. If you are a member of the United Service Automobile Association (USAA) or the American Automobile Association (AAA), Hertz will waive the fee. A note that USAA is only available for U.S. Military members and their families, while AAA is available to anyone.

Types of Cars

Don’t think you’ll only be allowed to drive a boring minivan. When you’re under 25, Hertz will let you choose from a wide range of cars, including economy all the way up to SUVs. Just don’t get your hopes up that you’ll be cruising in a Porsche: If you’re under 25, you can’t rent specialty vehicles or models from Hertz’s Dream Car collection, Prestige collection, or Adrenaline Collection.

Insurance Policy

While Hertz doesn’t require additional insurance if you are under 25 years old, the company strongly recommends that you have personal auto insurance. (Check with your credit card company and your car insurance carrier to see if rental car coverage is included.) Another good way to protect yourself: Sign up for the optional Loss Damage Waivers, so that you won’t be held responsible for damage to the car. After all, who needs to ruin a good vacation with a big car repair bill?
