Even if you only rent a car once in a blue moon, join the rental car rewards programs. They give you benefits such as upgrades, free rentals, a faster checkout process and other perks. Sixt Rent a Car‘s four-tier loyalty program, called Sixt Status, is fairly straightforward. It’s an easy way to advance in status.

The German rental firm Sixt is unlike most other major rental companies. Drive past one of their locations, and you might see the usual vehicles such as Chevrolets, Fords, and Nissans. But you’ll also likely to see luxury cars from Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz. The company’s goal is to provide a differentiated experience for consumers.

Hertz’s idea of a premium car might be a Chevy Impala or Nissan Maxima. Sixt would consider a premium car to be a Mercedes-Benz CLA. Sixt Status can allow you to upgrade to a vehicle that you’d never find at other rental car companies. Best of all, you could do it without paying a fee.

Sixt Status Levels

Express

With Sixt Status, the basic level of the program is Express Sixt. You can store profile information, speed the rental process with mobile check-in and collect frequent flyer miles or hotels points.

It would be a lot better if Sixt stored your frequent flyer account information in your Express Sixt profile. Membership lets you skip counter time. But Sixt doesn’t store a frequent flyer number, so you essentially have to stop at the counter if you want to collect the points. Given the hassle, it’s better to chase the cars rather than the miles.

One of the biggest immediate benefits of using the Sixt app is being able to use the mobile check-in feature. Verify your documents in the app, and flash a QR code with your license to get the keys. The app will save your information for the next trip, too, and provides special coupons.

Gold

Sixt’s Gold tier is where the program starts to shine. To hit Gold status, you need three or more rentals within the United States each year (or five or more rentals for non-U.S. residents). You get the minimal benefits of Express, and perks including a free additional driver on United States rentals. Gold tier members also get up to 10% off all rentals.

Platinum

Americans can reach Platinum status more easily than drivers in other parts of the world. Residents of the U.S. (and five other countries) can attain Platinum status after just 10 rentals per year, compared to the standard of 20 rentals required in the rest of the world. Platinum tier members also get up to 15% off all rentals.

Diamond

The most elite tier in Sixt’s loyalty program is the invitation-only Diamond status. Sixt does not offer many details about the criteria for achieving Diamond status, only saying that the tier is reserved for its “most loyal customers.”

Diamond status holders get up to a 20% discount as well as free, guaranteed upgrades and access to VIP treatment and an exclusive lounge. However, some FlyerTalk forum users claim they have not always been able to get an upgrade and that service varies depending on the rental location.

Get Sixt Status through Matching

You can also get status through Sixt’s matching program, providing another shortcut if you already have elite status with another car rental company. Sixt will match that status through its own loyalty program. For example, if you have Hertz Gold or Avis Preferred status, you’ll receive Sixt’s Gold status. If you have the equivalent of National Executive Elite, Hertz Five Star or Avis President’s Club status, you’ll be able to get Platinum status. Diamond status is available through matching to members of Lufthansa HON Circle, Emirates Platinum, and American Express Centurion programs.
