Electric vehicles (EVs) are surging in popularity, with drivers choosing these cars for their environmental advantage over their gas-guzzling counterparts. If you’re loyal to a specific rental car company, you may be wondering: Does Enterprise rent electric cars?

As electric cars increase in popularity, car rental companies like Enterprise are bringing more models into their fleets. One of the benefits of renting an all-electric vehicle is that they are charged by batteries, so renters do not have to worry about paying for gas. However, there are a few unique things to keep in mind when renting an EV, such as how and where to charge them.

Which Electric Cars Does Enterprise Offer?

Both Enterprise and its high-end Exotic Car Collection brand offer several types of electric cars. These range from standard sedans to high-end models like the Tesla Model S.

Enterprise has a car class called “Intermediate Electric Car Rental,” which includes the Nissan Leaf and similar vehicles.

For drivers that prefer a fancier ride, Enterprise’s Exotic Car Collection offers several high-end EVs depending on the rental location. The “Electric Luxury Sedan” class includes the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan and Jaguar I-PACE.

Enterprise’s Electric Car Policies

Enterprise has some specific policies regarding EVs in its fine print, including information about a possible fee related to recharging the vehicle when returning it.

Charging Policy

Usually, renters have three options for refueling a gas-powered vehicle — paying for the gas themselves at the pump, purchasing fuel in advance or paying a refueling charge. But because EVs don’t run on fuel, companies like Enterprise are updating their rental policies to address how much battery life the car should have when customers return them.

Enterprise says in its terms and conditions that renters must pay an EV recharging fee “if [the] vehicle is returned with less charge than when rented.” However, how much that fee costs To be sure, ask this question at the rental car counter before renting.

Roadside Assistance

Enterprise’s terms and conditions say that renters who choose its Roadside Assistance Protection service will not have to pay for towing an EV to a nearby charging station if they run out of battery life.

Will Your Insurance Cover an Electric Car Rental?

Before renting an EV, it’s wise to make sure your personal auto insurance policy will cover the value of the rental. Since EVs typically cost more than standard vehicles due to their complex batteries and high-tech components, check to make sure whether your personal auto insurance or credit card has a sufficient coverage level for these vehicles. Also, be sure to check whether those policies would cover a problem with the battery or any other electrical issues.

The Enterprise Exotic Car Collection has stricter renter requirements overall, whether it be for EVs or other types of vehicles. For example, renters must be at least 25.

How to Rent an EV from Enterprise

Renting an EV from Enterprise is relatively straightforward, but requires a few extra steps than searching for a standard rental. You can choose your rental car location, date and pickup time as you would for any car.
