Have you ever rented a car, only to realize later on that you can’t find the receipt? Luckily, this is a common situation with a relatively easy fix. In most situations, you can quickly request a car rental receipt online. However, each rental brand has its own policies for how long they hold onto these receipts and what kind of information you’ll need to retrieve them. Here’s everything you need to know.

Alamo

Alamo has what it calls an online receipt retriever, which requires the driver’s license number and last name of the renter. You will also need the exact start and end date of the reservation to successfully pull up the receipt. Receipts are available for up to a full year in certain countries.

Avis

Avis has an online tool for looking up receipts. You will need to provide the country where the vehicle was rented, the last name of the renter and the confirmation or rental agreement number. Avis Preferred loyalty members can also access receipts simply by logging into their accounts. You’ll have to download Adobe Acrobat to read the receipt. If you cannot access your receipt after 24 hours, Avis asks customers to call 1-800-352-7900 for help.

Budget

Budget has an online form for looking up receipts. The company requires the country where the reservation was picked up, last name of the renter and the confirmation number. Like its sister company Avis, Budget requires Adobe Acrobat to display the receipt. Customers with a Budget account can also look up their rewards by logging into the website. You can also request a receipt by calling 800-621-2844.

Dollar

Dollar Car Rental provides a search tool on its website to find a receipt. To pull up the document, you’ll need the last name of the renter and either a driver’s license or credit card number. Receipts might not show up until seven days after the rental was returned, and are available online for six months. Corporate rentals using Dollar Charge Cards may require a license to obtain, and the system can show 20 receipts at a time. New Zealand rental receipts are not available online. If you run into any problems pulling up the receipt, email reservations@dollar.com.

Enterprise

Enterprise has an online search tool for finding a receipt, which requires the renter’s last name and driver’s license number. The easiest way to access Enterprise receipts is to sign up for an Enterprise Plus account, where receipts will be available 48 hours after returning the vehicle and 360 days thereafter.

Fox

Fox Rent a Car requires customers to use its generic contact form to request invoices. Be sure to select “email invoice copy” as the category.

Hertz

Hertz has a dedicated form to fill out when requesting a receipt. You’ll need to provide the last name of the renter, along with either their driver’s license details or credit card number used to secure the reservation. The system can only show up to 20 receipts at a time, which are uploaded seven days after returning the vehicle and available online for the following six months.

National

National Car Rental provides online receipts only for Emerald Club members. Everyone else has to call 1-800-468-3334 and ask a representative for help. Emerald Club members can log onto their account to find receipts, and also sign up to receive electronic receipts automatically after every rental.

Payless

Payless Car Rental requires its members to sign up for an account on its website to access a form, and then create a ticket to access a receipt. The company says it requires up to 72 hours to respond.

Sixt

Sixt allows customers to pull up receipts up to six months old using its “manage your booking” login. This requires a booking number and email address. Digging up older receipts requires creating a ticket with a customer service specialist.

Thrifty

Thrifty uses an online form to find receipts, which requires the last name of the person who rented the vehicle as well as either the driver’s license number or credit card number used when making the reservation. Receipts may not be available for up to a week after completing the reservation, and live online for six months after that. Receipts for New Zealand rentals are not available, and corporate reservations using charge cards from Thrifty’s sister company Hertz may require a license to retrieve. For any issues with finding the receipt, email reservationinquiries@thrifty.com.
