With gas prices soaring, any deal on gas is a good one this summer. If you shop at Safeway supermarkets, transform your food and pharmacy purchases into fuel discounts through the Safeway Gas Rewards program.

Safeway is a grocery store chain with more than 900 locations in 18 states. The brand is especially popular on the West Coast in California, Arizona, Colorado, Washington and Oregon. Safeway also has a strong presence in the greater Washington, D.C region.

In addition to the flagship Safeway brand, the Gas Reward Points program is also available at Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions, Randall’s, Tom Thumb, Carrs, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Star Market, and ACME Markets.

Get One Gas Point Per Dollar Spent on Groceries

Once you enroll in Safeway’s customer loyalty program with a valid phone number, you will be able to accumulate gas points when checking out at Safeway or its sister stores. With the Gas Reward Points program, you earn one point for each dollar spent on groceries and certain pharmacy products.

Get Two Gas Points Per Dollar Spent on Gift Cards

Want to get Gas Reward Points even more quickly? To get double the points, purchase gift cards at the checkout aisle when paying at Safeway. For every dollar you spend on certain gift cards, you will get two fuel points.

While many gift cards at Safeway are eligible to help earn fuel rewards, not all of them provide these savings. For example, Chevron, Texaco and Shell gift cards are not eligible to earn fuel points.

How to Redeem Safeway Gas Points for Huge Savings

Once you shop enough at Safeway, you’ll start accumulating a balance of points you can turn into savings on fuel. The points should be reflected in your balance four hours after earning them, and there is no limit to how many you can accumulate each month. However, these points expire each month — meaning that you need to use them or lose them.

So, how many points do you need to actually save money on gas at Safeway? The math is simple. For every 100 fuel points you earn, you will get 10 cents off per gallon at the pump. So, 1,000 points will translate into a dollar off of each gallon you pump during each visit.

Note that Safeway puts a limit of 1,000 points on a single fillup.

How to Sign Up for Safeway’s Gas Reward Points Program

To sign up for fuel points, you will first want to make sure you are enrolled in Safeway’s “Safeway for U” loyalty program. In addition to offering fuel savings, this program also gives you access to food coupons and special, members-only deals. These perks, plus services like delivery and keeping track of fuel points, are available in Safeway’s mobile app.

There are two ways to sign up for the Safeway for U program that allows you to earn and redeem fuel points — in the store or online. You can either do this in the store by entering your phone number at the checkout lane, or online through Safeway’s website or mobile app.

Don’t shop at Safeway? Check out fuel points programs at other chains like Kroger and Marathon.
