Reviews of Mex Rent a Car

While Mex Rent a Car does have several positive reviews from customers, it also has relatively low aggregate scores on some leading consumer review websites.

On the consumer review website Trustpilot, Mex has just 1.4 stars out of five. This rating is based off of 184 consumer reviews, with 89% of the reviews posted falling into the “bad” category. Customers giving one-star reviews complained about several issues, claiming they had issues getting their deposit back and confusion about insurance policies.

Mex Rent a Car is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which gives the car rental company an “F” rating on its website. The website has closed 28 complaints about the company in the past three years, 21 of which were made in the last year.

Yelp and Google Reviews vary by Mex Rent a Car location, but also tend to be underwhelming. For example, a location in San Diego only has 1.5 stars out of five, some of which appear to include complaints about other locations as well. This location did a bit better on Google, with 2.3 stars based on more than 600 reviews. But still, the score is far from great.

The complaints largely focused on customers’ claims about not receiving the same car they had reserved, as well as unexpected charges. Mex does appear to be directly responding to certain Google reviews. The location at Mexico City International Airport had 2.5 stars on Google, while the Cancún location had 2.6 stars.

When you rent from Mex or any other rental car company, we recommend making sure that you document the condition of the car in detail before driving it off the lot to avoid any issues with damage claims later on. Also, be sure to read the terms and conditions outlined in your contract extra carefully. In addition, make sure that the total charges matches the quote you received. Be sure to check that unwanted add-ons were not tacked on to your reservation that will hike up your costs.
