Renting a car in Nevada? Whether you’re looking for a ride to help you get around Las Vegas or visit a nearby national park, there are a few things you should know about state laws, local roads and insurance information. Here’s what to know about car rentals in Nevada.

Minimum Age to Rent a Car in Nevada

Major Car Rental Companies: Most rental car companies require renters to be at least 21. Drivers between 21-24 typically must pay a “young renter fee” that can cost more than $25 per day depending on the company. However, there are a few exceptions. Hertz will rent a car to 20-year-olds in Nevada and most other states. To avoid the young renter fee, consider joining an organization such as the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Other Options: Car sharing platform Turo requires U.S. drivers to be at least 18 to book a trip, but renters must be at least 21 to book a vehicle with a market value of more than $20,000. Young drivers under 21 will also have to pay a young renter fee starting at $50 per day, or $30 per day for ages 21-24. Drivers 21 and under must buy a Turo protection plan.

What Do You Need to Rent a Car in Nevada?

Driver’s License: To rent a car in Nevada, drivers need to show a hard copy of a valid driver’s license. Rental car companies generally do not accept digital licenses in any state.

Credit or Debit Card: Renters also have to show a credit or debit card to cover the estimated rental charges and a deposit, which varies depending on the rental company, location and type of vehicle.  Some companies might request an additional form of identification when renting with a debit card to secure the reservation, or require proof of return travel at airport locations. Certain rental locations may not accept debit cards to start a reservation or rent premium vehicles.

Good Driving Record: Rental car companies may verify your driving record at their discretion. While this may not happen for every rental, drivers with a history of drunk or reckless driving or multiple accidents should consider the possibility of a driving check before renting in Nevada or any other state.

Nevada Car Rental Insurance Laws

Liability Coverage: In Nevada, rental car companies provide at least the minimum liability insurance required under state law.

Nevada requires drivers to have the following minimum liability coverage levels:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injuries
  • $50,000 per incident for bodily injuries
  • $20,000 in property damage

Additional Driver Fees For Nevada Rentals

Nevada caps additional driver fees, which increase each year to reflect inflation. Spouses and co-workers are considered authorized additional drivers under state law.

State Taxes and Fees for Rental Cars

Nevada has some of the highest taxes and fees in the country for rental cars, making it even more important to get the lowest possible base rate on your reservation. When you ask AutoSlash for a free quote and track price drops, we’ll not only scour the web for the best deals and coupon codes but also send you alerts if the price goes down so you can rebook at the lower rate.

Government Surcharge: Nevada rentals carry a 10% surcharge.

Sales Tax: Nevada rentals are also subject to sales tax. In Las Vegas, the combined tax rate is 8.375%.

County Tax: Nevada rentals are also subject to county tax. For Las Vegas rentals, the Clark County tax rate is 2%.

Nevada Airport Rentals

Airport rentals are notorious for carrying several additional fees in addition to sales tax, local taxes and any extra charges the rental car company chooses to charge to recoup its costs of doing business.

Concession Recovery Fee: This charge at facilities including airports and resorts varies. At Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), for example, the concession recovery fee is 10%, while at Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) it is 11.11%. If this sounds high, know that Vegas resorts tend to charge even higher fees when renting directly at the hotel. AutoSlash has seen this fee top 30% for resort renters, so comparing fees at different locations is crucial.

Customer Facility Charge: Rental car companies may also charge a customer facility fee to maintain the rental car facility. This charge varies depending on the airport.

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS):  $5.50 per day

Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO): $9.80 per day

Parking and Driving in Las Vegas

If you plan to rent a car in Las Vegas, consider parking and driving conditions in the city.

Driving in Las Vegas: While it’s always important to stay alert when driving a rental car, Las Vegas can be especially distracting. As one of the world’s foremost tourism hubs, Las Vegas tends to be bustling with wandering pedestrians at any given moment — especially in the iconic Strip section of Las Vegas Boulevard lined with neon casinos.

Parking in Las Vegas: The cost of parking can vary widely in Las Vegas, with some hotels charging $20 or more per night for this convenience. However, some hotels still offer free parking or waive the fee for loyalty members. Be sure to factor in the cost of parking when booking a hotel, as this expense can quickly rise into the triple digits for longer trips.
