As Germany’s Sixt Rent a Car rapidly expands its offices in the United States, you may be wondering who owns the company. Sixt Rent a Car’s parent company is Sixt Group, which is in turn owned by Sixt SE, which bills itself as a “leading international provider of high-quality mobility services.” The company also offers ride-hailing services and monthly subscriptions for monthly rentals.
Sixt continues to be a family business headquartered near Munich, with Konstantin Sixt and Alexander Sixt co-chairing Sixt SE’s management board. The majority shareholder of the company is Erich Sixt Vermögensverwaltungs GmbH, which holds 53.8% of the company. The remaining 41.7% of the company consists of publicly traded shares in Germany.
History of Sixt Rent a Car
The brand is more than a century old. Martin Sixt founded the business — then called Sixt Autofahren und Selbstfahrer — in 1912. His nephew Hans took control of the business in 1927 and formed the car rental company “Auto Sixt” in 1951.

Sixt then opened its first airport rental branches in Frankfurt and Munich, and continued to grow at airports across the country. Erich Sixt took over Sixt in 1969, and the company went public in 1986. The business then went on to expand internationally across Europe throughout the 1990s.
The company distinguish itself as a technology leader in 2008, when it launched mobile booking apps for iPhone and BlackBerry. Sixt entered the U.S. market in 2011, opening its first locations in Florida. It now has more than 100 locations in 25 states, and continues to grow.
How to Make the Most of Renting from Sixt
There are several ways to make the most of your Sixt rental experience:
Join the Sixt Status frequent renter program.
One of the best ways to get the most bang for your buck when renting from Sixt is to join its four-tier Sixt Status Program. Signing up for free will allow you to immediately take advantage of mobile check-in and the ability to earn bonus points through partner programs. After just three reservations, level up to the Gold tier to get a 10% discount on future rentals and a free additional driver. That discount increases to 15% with the Platinum status after 10 rentals, which also includes free upgrades. Invitation-only Diamond status includes up to 20% off of rentals.
Use the Sixt app.
Sixt pioneered car rental apps and has since updated its mobile experience to streamline the car rental experience. The app allows users to quickly make a reservation, cancel a reservation, look up your receipt, find charging stations and use car sharing or ride-hailing services. It also provides mobile check-in at airport locations in the U.S. and Europe, which works by scanning your license and getting a QR code to pick up your key.
